As a music journalist, I spend the bulk of my day looking for new artists that are going to change the landscape of pop as we know it, preferably for the better. I often come across artists that I’m certain can have a substantial impact on at least on aspect of music, but few really blow me away with their narrative or approach to making music in general. And then, once in a blue moon, I discover an artist like AV Super Sunshine who does just that with tracks like “Time Bomb,” and I start to remember why I got into this business in the first place.

AV Super Sunshine recently cut two remixes of “Time Bomb,” one a club version and another destined for the radio, and once I got exposed to both of them there was no breaking my concentrated focus on their individually strong deliveries. While the radio cut is an excellent piece of music, the club version really gives me an idea of who AV is as a musician and as a composer in full color where it doesn’t feel like we’re going to run out of time. He’s modest in his arrangement, but his sound is big and bombastic; larger than life, if you will.

I’ve found that we fall in love with electronica and its greatest stewards because of the genre’s expansiveness, and I don’t think that anyone knows how to utilize its space better than AV does. He doesn’t rush into anything in this track, and nothing feels forced or overstated. Everything unfolds as it should, almost like a calculated mystery novel, and by the time we meet the plot twist we’ve already become so immersed in its colorful storyline that we don’t ever want to get to the bottom of this enigma once and for all.

“Time Bomb” was meant to burn up the speakers within the confines of a nightclub, but it could actually soundtrack a lazy summer night around a bonfire just as well. There’s a kinship with melody that AV Super Sunshine exhibits whenever he gets behind the soundboard, and in this song in particular we get to see how commanding he really can be in a major key. This is a man who seizes the day and doesn’t waste any opportunity to make his sound more refined and more exotic in nature. This is someone who I would tell any young musician they could look up to both aesthetically and ethically.

If you’re in the market for music that makes you feel genuinely good about being alive as opposed to just artificially satisfied by a catchy chorus line, AV Super Sunshine is the artist to see. “Time Bomb” struts with the swagger of a predestined classic, and it’s only a sliver of the immensely diverse discography that AV brings with him to the table. I don’t know what pop music is going to sound like ten or twenty years from now, but I think that this guy’s legacy could be a major variable in its development.
