Whoever said that rock music had to rely solely on overdriven guitars, chest pumping masculinity and glass shattering bass was a just a tad bit short sighted for my taste. This opinion is held by a uniquely inarticulate class of music critics that I often have to spend time educating when I’m not at work or being forced to read their dissertations of my opinions. These are the same critics that will tell you that indie singer/songwriters as a whole have reached the pinnacle of redundancy in the last five years, and there is no creativity or drive left of the dial anymore. We’re supposed to believe that the underground just disappeared? That no one is producing anything relevant because of Facebook or Soundcloud? How much self-destruction do these people have to put themselves through, I’ve often wondered, to even consider themselves relevant? What a headache.

All the scene politics and garbage debates left to the side, I want to tell you about a hot record I just heard. It’s a new song from the duo of Scott Oatley and Rachel Panchal (fancifully known as Lord & Lady), and it’s putting all of those stingy moronic critics I was telling you about earlier to bed. That song is “The Lift,” and it is exactly what I’ve come to expect, and frankly, their fans have come to demand when it comes to this fierce twosome’s output. They’ve been burning up YouTube for almost two years now, and if you’ve managed to escape the grasp of their mammoth reach in the soundtrack world, then you likely haven’t watched any television or seen any movies in the last few years. Now it’s time to take things to the next level.

How appropriate that this single drops just in time for summer, when beach season will draw countless new loves and flings together out of thin air that will be deserving of a spellbinding new backing track like “The Lift.” It’s very much a poppy electro-folk song, but there’s also an underlying sensuousness to the two singers’ back and forth verses with each other that creates a richly romantic and calming vibe. It’s almost like foreplay; we know that we’re building up to something very intimate and fantastically gripping, but we’re also having a good time feeling the anticipation grow from deep within ourselves. There’s nothing cheap or dirty about “The Lift,” in fact, for such a freewheeling love song, the track feels remarkably nimble and tightly wound together like a new ball of yarn.

Lord & Lady are at the top of their game right now, and if they are able to keep up with the momentum that they’re generating for themselves, they’re about to enter a much different arena than the one that they’ve had the most success in. The world outside of the studio is the hardest one to conquer in this quest towards superstardom, and while they’ve still got a long way to go to prove themselves in that aspect, singles like this are a great way to get the ball rolling.
