Suddenly I was thrust back into the past when Rock n Roll seemed simple and fun. When J Frank Wilson recorded “Last Kiss”, or when Neil Sedaka was doing “Calendar Girl”. I heard remnants of “Wipe Out”, and a touch of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the songs of the San Francisco-based indie rock faction, Hi Lo Ha. Although each one of their songs bring back a memory, their lyrics are still very relevant to today. Their new EP “Ain’t Gone Tonight” is a collection of rock, country and country/rock songs that are pleasing to the ear, and a great listen for anyone who love great music in those genres.

My personal favorite is track number one on the EP entitled “Cold Weather Clothes”. It’s melodic, powerful and vibrantly instrumental. It provides the listener with an addicting sense of “I want more”. It is probably one of the longest songs I have ever listened to on any EP, and it is so refreshing to hear music released the way an artist wants to put it out unrestricted by the normal requirements dictated by the industry. You have to download this album and you can see what I mean. It is really, really, unique and you will be happy you did so.

The other four tracks are equally engaging and also a rock-n-roll blast to listen to. “Radio” is a tender throwback to times gone by as well. It’s a catchy, feel good musical story to listen to, while “Guest List” invites you to a concert scene, …..and you get to get in for free!

“Thinking ‘Bout A Friend” is an amazing song about a friend who passed away unexpectedly, and is a standout song on the EP. You can definitely hear a Mick Jagger influence in this song, and along with the rest of the Hi Lo Ha band members you find yourself singing along to the chorus.

The band was formed by Ben Reisdorph who sings the lead vocals, while playing guitar, and Brian Davis who plays bass and sings. Ben does a phenomenal job playing guitar as well as singing lead. His voice has a unique angel-like quality attached to it, similar to singer Tommy Roe when he recorded “Sweet Pea” or “Dizzy”. The band is rounded out by the very talented James Fisher on drums and Willie Rusert on keyboards and guitar. These guys are great musicians and actually named their band (Hi Lo Ha) from the Woodstock area home where Bob Dylan wrote “Highway 61 Revisited,” which tells you right away that they have great musical tastes and influences.

The EP is an essential purchase for anyone who just wants to enjoy music without the complications of life’s stress and worries. I would keep an eye open for this band, I feel like really great things will follow this EP….download your copy of “Ain’t Gone Tonight” by Hi Lo Ha today.
