Exclusive Interviw with Brynn Bowman

We want to learn all things Brynn Bowman! How did you get into the music business?

Music has always been a big part of my life, but I really started getting into the business about 3 years ago. I decided to get my master’s degree in commercial voice at Belmont University in Nashville. Having studied classical music in undergrad, I knew basically nothing about the contemporary music industry. I learned a LOT while in grad school, and that’s when my artistry took off. I’ve slowly acquired more knowledge of the business, and now I’m neck deep in creating my business as a solo artist.

Do you get involved in the business of it all or do you concentrate on the creative side more?

It’s important to stay balanced on both sides. I am definitely more of a creative mind than a business mind, so I’ve reached out for a lot of help with that side of things. I’m great with coming up with ideas for music, promotion, photoshoots, and videos, but it’s been a challenge to learn how to execute those ideas effectively. The more I’ve focused on it, the more I’ve adapted. As a solo musician, you absolutely have to know how to run a business, too.

What has been really imperative advice you’ve received to balance it all?

The most important advice I have received is to stay genuine and true to yourself as an artist while also standing up for yourself and absorbing every piece of knowledge you can. Learn to apply the lessons you learn to your music and your business. Hard work will outweigh talent every single time. If you have a good work ethic in addition to talent, you’re unstoppable! It’s a slow climb to the top, but it’s absolutely possible with perseverance and drive. Don’t lose your passion for music, and develop a love for business as well. Being a musician is difficult! But you can do it!

You really beam confidence in your music, can you share what’s behind that success?

I’m not afraid to say it like it is. In my opinion, less call a spade a spade. You can sugarcoat situations all you want, but at the end of the day, one statement can end any confusion. Honestly, I’ve had trouble expressing my own anger. I find that I can easily tune into that anger by writing songs about it. It helps me process that emotion and understand what is really behind it. The confidence you hear is what I wish I could say to people sometimes, and it strikes a chord with my listeners. I’ve learned how to be more straightforward with people through my music! Truly, all you can do is be yourself and speak your mind. You might rub some people the wrong way, but as long as you don’t intentionally hurt people, at least you’re being true to yourself.

We love the style of your music, could you explain it to someone who hasn’t listened yet?

Imagine a world where P!nk, Paramore, Panic! At The Disco, and Taylor Swift had a baby. That’s my music. It’s punk-influenced pop rock music! The vocals and guitar and strong, and there’s a sense of blunt genuity. I’m not afraid to be transparent or vulnerable. I connect to my listeners through complex emotion and a focus on mental health while also being a badass.
