THE ENCOURAGEMENT FOR DEAR GENRE
What was it like the first time you realized music is what you wanted to do as your life’s work?
I was probably about 16 or 17 when I realized music is what I wanted to do as my life’s work. Before that I saw people living that life, I just never had any desire to write my own material and take it out into the real world.
Who was the most encouraging with your talent?
Unlike many artists, I’ve had more encouragement from family and friends than discouragement. The most influential and encouraging people regarding my musical talent would firstly be Yildi, who taught me the fundamentals and taught me to love music in its rawest form, as auditory emotion. Emotionally and financially, my biggest supporters have always been my mom and dad who have never doubted my talent and my drive to succeed. They’ve always been the ones to say “Yes, take that opportunity!” and have loved me even when it hasn’t worked out!
Was there anyone that was the least?
It would probably make me feel justified in some way to take this opportunity to call out the least supportive person in my musical life; however I haven’t had anyone in my life that was deliberately unsupportive.
You make performing seem seamless. How much practice goes into what you do?
Thank you so much! I’ve always felt very self conscious on stage when I’m performing. It used to be that I’d always have a guitar or a pair of drumsticks in my hand pretending I was performing, constantly trying to get faster and more accurate and that’s really payed off for times where I have the studio booked for 5 hours and need to cut an entire song in that timeframe. I think you’ve really gotta love playing because if you tried to justify the practice hours spent alone in a room by yourself, it might not make sense. My best performances are always the ones where I tune the audience out.
With all the successes you’ve experienced in your career, can you recall a time where you were tested in it?
If I’m being honest, I’m probably tested on a more regular basis than I experience success. I can’t expect other people to experience my trials, see the doors that have closed on me and go through the tests I’ve been through personally.
How did you make the decision to keep on going for your goals?
I made the decision to keep on going for my goals after I went through a short period of being a full time student. I wasn’t playing much music but when I would hear it on the radio or see it on television, I would get really mad. After some time of thinking about why that was, I concluded for myself that it was because I wasn’t actively pursuing some sort of musical venture or working on a project and when I was around music, something within me told me I had to get back there..
Who or what did you turn to when you needed a refocus?
I think like most artists, when I need to refocus and regain some inspiration, I turn to the work of my idols and the individuals that made me wanna pursue music in the first place.
Tell our audience about your latest passion project!
My latest passion project comes in the form of a run of singles. With the label ‘Summer singles’, it’s my way of creating a coherent platform to release songs that vary more drastically in sound, feel and age than an average ‘Dear Genre’ record.
How did you come up with what you wanted to do next?
After what seemed like a long, confusing time thinking about what I wanted to do next, the ‘Summer singles’ idea really stemmed from the frustration I was feeling in response to the release of my last full length album, “Man in Full” in December of 2020. When I release songs individually, they seem to have a broader reach and generate more attention than when I release albums. I’m not sure why that is but I’ve always been willing to go on and try the next thing if that means I’m able to reach more ears.
How are you making time for everything you do!
I love playing music, bringing it together into one piece in the studio then taking that out in front of real people so making time for all of it comes second nature to me. It’s a top priority I guess you might say.
What are you focusing on right now going forward with your music?
Going forward with my music, I’ll be continuing to add to the installments to the ‘Summer Singles’, playing locally and I’m aiming to add a number of regional shows to the line-up. I also plan to be in touch pretty frequequently with my management team BsquaredMGMT about how I can push my online presence as I aim to pull more people in.
How did that come about?
Since creating a platform for these otherwise stray songs, (‘The Summer Singles’) I’ve been picking through tracks that date all the way back to when I first started making music. Anything that peaks my interest or catches my ear basically gets pulled back out and revamped with the exception of “Body of Water” and it’s unnamed B-side which were written this summer.
