Exclusive Interview with Avatari

Hello Avatari! Thanks for being here today! 

Thanks for having me! 

What inspires you to work in this industry?

I love making music, I love to perform, and I love connecting with people. I’ve loved it since I was little and I haven’t found anything I like better – so this is my passion. 

What milestone are you working towards in your career right now? 

I recorded a bunch of music right before the pandemic struck. I was getting ready to play live and tour to promote it, which was wiped off the table (as it was for all artists). So I had to pivot. I’ve been focused over the last year on revamping my release strategy to take advantage of social media, live-streaming, and connecting with my fans over the internet. In 2021 I’m going to release ten songs as singles and EPs, and I’m ready to take everything to the next level. I’d like to reach as many music-loving human beings as possible. Fortunately, in this day and age, the technology exists for indie artists to reach a global audience. I’d like for my music to become a global phenomenon. That’s the milestone I’m working towards. 

What is the most memorable and exciting thing you have ever seen in this industry? 

Wow, well two things come to mind so I’m going to cheat and say… 1) When I was sixteen I got to go on tour working for the Rolling Stones. I know, I know. I’m ridiculously lucky and it was amazing. A friend of my family did their VIP ticketing, so I got to be her assistant for a summer. And I got to see the Stones play every night for about a month. It blew my mind and left an indelible mark on my soul. I was like “that is what I want to do with the rest of my life.” And 2) the festival concert movement. It’s my favorite way to experience music, both as an audience member and as a performer. Not only do you get to consume massive amounts and varieties of all the coolest and most current live music (some that you may never have experienced otherwise), but the crowds are full of some of the biggest music lovers in the world, so the energy is through the roof. And they’re generally so appreciative. For those of us that missed Woodstock and the summer of love – it’s the next best thing.

If you could pass on one message to your fans, what would that message be? 

I love you and I’m here for you. If I’ve learned one thing through the pandemic, it’s how deeply connected we are as a human race. And if there are two things I’ve learned, it’s that we crave an experience of that connection more than anything else in the world. It’s put me in touch with how important it is to reach people through my music. I’ve been blown away at the amazing sensitivity and creativity and powerful vulnerability of some of my incredible fans, who’ve shared with me both the ups and the downs of this unprecedented and intense roller coaster of a year. Aside from sharing my music, I’ve found the most powerful thing that I can do is listen. So that’s what I try to do for my fans. I’m here to be with you and to listen to your hearts and your minds and to go through this crazy journey together.

What makes you feel most alive?

Music and my family. There’s nothing better in my world than those two things. I’ve actually been able to combine them. My dad plays guitar and my three-year-old son is learning drums (yes we got my three-year-old son a drum kit – sorry neighbors) so I’ve been able to play music with both of them. It’s a beautiful gift. 

What is one thing you’ve had to learn the hard way? 

There is no one who is going to make my career happen for me. I have to do it. Which doesn’t mean that I’m alone. One of the other most important things I’ve had to learn is when to ask for help. But I have to do the asking. And I have to choose the person to ask. I need to write the music, and learn the business, and do the marketing, and assemble my team. For years I was waiting for that to magically happen for me. And then it clicked – oh yeah, maybe I need to do it myself.  

How often do you write songs? 

I’m constantly writing. I get song ideas every day. Melodies, lyrics, topics I want to write songs about. As far as structured songwriting time where I’m sitting down in the music room pounding out finished songs? I have different phases. Like I said, before the pandemic, I was recording and writing tons of music. I was in the zone. Honestly, the last ten months I’ve been so focused on marketing and promoting that I haven’t been writing very much other than creating a little vault of potential song ideas. But now I’m shifting. I’m writing every day and it feels great. All the thoughts and feelings I’ve been having over the last year (and there have been MANY) are starting to flow through me into new music. I can’t wait to see where it leads. 

What is your favorite snack? 

Ha. Pizza. Is that a snack or a meal? Doesn’t matter. Pizza.
