In Hughie Mac’s stunning interpretation of the opulent “It’s Impossible,” from his new release Hughie Mac Sings Some Great Songs Part 3, a dark silence is punctured by a haunting set of strings that break away into some of the most indulgently elegant vocals I’ve heard on any record this year. We’re not listening to a dated or meager strike at greatness and Mac isn’t stitching together the pieces of someone else’s work on this song; we’re listening to him spin together his colors with the songwriter’s, and its creating a tapestry that we had no idea was in store for us when we first started listening to this thought provoking album. This isn’t the only transcendent slice of entrancement that Hughie Sings Some Great Songs Part 3 has for us to behold, either. “The Lady is a Tramp” sees Mac do fearlessly blazing through firm Sinatra territory like he’s one of the original Rat Pack himself, while “The Wayward Wind” shows off his lighter, gentler side for us to get to know a little closer. Once I really think about it, there wasn’t any track that felt jaded or tired in the entirety of this record, and that’s a phenomenal statement considering the age of some of these songs and their masterful performer. Regardless of anything put in front of him, he proves that neither of those details hold any sort of relevance when it comes to turning out deeply compelling and spellbinding music.

The biggest complaint that I and a lot of other music journalists and fans have with modern Top 40 radio isn’t that there’s a lack of talented artists making music that ignites excitement in audiences of today just as much as past generations’ did much in the same way; it’s that it doesn’t feel like there’s a whole lot of heart and soul left in the music anymore. None of it feels like we’re listening to someone pouring all of themselves into their work, their craft, to share an experience with us that is unique and spiritual, something almost not of our earth but of the heavens above. Hughie Mac is like a refreshing cool breeze over the hot desolate landscape of FM radio today, and his feel good vibes and professional caliber attack of song and verse are an inspiring example of what the human spirit is capable of when put into the right circumstances to create something. There’s no question that Hughie Mac Sings Some Great Songs Part 3isn’t trying to be a lightning rod for social commentary or a watershed turning point in the further development and evolution of pop or rock music, it is overwhelmingly obvious that what Mac was trying to do with this album was give us a glimpse into the rich treasures of what we’ve already got in stock. On that front, this is a magnificently ambitious record from an artist who is more than adept at handling the workload. Give it a spin when you have the time, you won’t regret taking a chance on this enticing entertainer.
