Nymphya is Back With “What Have I Forgotten?”

As someone who typically steers clear of experimental music, I wasn’t sure what to expect from NYMPHYA’s new album, *What Have I Forgotten?*. However, after spending some time with it, I’m pleasantly surprised by how captivating and engaging it is. While it’s quite different from what I’m used to, NYMPHA’s work has managed to pique my curiosity and open my ears to a new realm of musical exploration.

The album begins with the title track, “What Have I Forgotten,” and from the start, it’s clear that this is not your everyday listening experience. The music is layered and intricate, weaving together a wide net of elements into something that feels both modern and timeless. NYMPHA’s sound is lush and ethereal, creating a sonic atmosphere that feels almost like stepping into a dream. The textures and dynamics of the music remind me a bit of David Lynch’s musical projects, though NYMPHYA’s approach is fundamentally different. While Lynch’s work often leans into dark, brooding atmospheres with a cinematic edge, NYMPHA’s music is more about inviting the listener into a serene, introspective space.

Tracks like “Liminal” offer a glimpse into NYMPHYA’s creative world. There’s something undeniably intriguing about how she blends dreamy melodies with thoughtful lyrics. It’s a bit like discovering a hidden treasure within a new genre—one that I hadn’t explored deeply before but am now finding quite fascinating. NYMPHYA’s music has a way of drawing you in, making you feel like you’re part of something both unique and profound.

The album’s overall mood is reflective and introspective, and songs like “Beachcombing” evoke a sense of nostalgia and personal reflection. The music is both calming and thought-provoking, creating a gentle invitation for listeners to look inward. It’s a quality that reminds me of how experimental music can be a powerful tool for personal exploration, even if it’s a bit outside my usual listening habits.

What’s especially unique about What Have I Forgotten? is its innovative approach to album packaging and presentation. NYMPHA has really gone the extra mile to create an immersive experience for her fans. The album is physically or digitally, and each option comes with a 170-page hardback book (or a digital book for your Kindle), which adds a layer of depth to the album’s themes and concepts.

The digital download is especially interesting because it includes not only the album but also spoken word inductions recorded by NYMPHYA herself. These guided introspections offer an additional hour of content and are designed to take listeners on a personal journey. It’s like a guided meditation paired with music, and it’s a creative way to enhance the album’s immersive qualities. Although I wasn’t initially familiar with this kind of multi-layered approach, I found it to be a fascinating addition that made the whole experience more engaging.

What Have I Forgotten? has been a surprisingly delightful foray into the world of experimental music for me. It’s not just an album; it’s an experience that invites you to explore and reflect. The album is full of moments that echo the kind of textural, atmospheric qualities found in David Lynch’s musical projects, though NYMPHYA’s approach is decidedly different. Lynch’s music is known for its moody, cinematic soundscapes that create a sense of unease and intrigue. NYMPHA’s What Have I Forgotten?, on the other hand, offers a more ethereal and introspective journey.

FYI NYMPHYA will be embarking on her first 5 city UK tour in September 2024 backed by a full band in her 2 hour show “Outside of Time.. Magical Music from The Dreamery” that weaves stories and songs with Brighton, UK artist Rose Thorn.

While experimental music isn’t usually my go-to genre, NYMPHYA’s What Have I Forgotten? has been a pleasant and eye-opening introduction to this type of art. The album’s intricate soundscapes and innovative presentation have managed to capture my interest and make me want to explore more in this genre. It’s clear that NYMPHYA is creating something truly unique, and I’m eager to see where her music takes me next. For anyone who’s on the fence about experimental music, NYMPHYA’s work is a compelling and accessible starting point.
