Exclusive Interviw with SAVOR

Savor is a combination Santana Tribute and original Latin rock band. We’ve been performing pretty steadily since 2002 — with a lull during the shut-down, of course.

Who are you taking a page from when it comes to achieving your music goals? 

Leonardo da Vinci! 🙂 Seriously, he was always working on his craft. The Mona Lisa wasn’t “dashed off” in a few days — he carried it around for YEARS tweaking it and improving it. That is the essence of my musical approach: Keep at it until you’ve produced something you’re proud of.

What do you have your heart set on for your music career?

I have a number of recording projects in mind, but one of my “bucket list” goals is to do a collection of cover songs that are re-worked to fit our band’s style. Interestingly, most listeners don’t realize that Santana did not write his biggest hits — they were covers. Evil Ways, Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen, and Oye Como Va were all remakes of other people’s songs.

In a different band (guitar / bass / drums instrumental trio), I’m going in a completely different direction: jazz and jazz-rock originals that we’re currently writing and arranging. I’d like to record those, too, when we have enough good ones.

When are you finishing up your next project? 

No date yet. Considering that the last CD took 6 years, I’m not holding my breath! To me, quality is much more important than quantity.

How do you respond to obstacles in the music making process?

Cursing, mostly! Then when I calm down, I realize there is nearly always an alternate way to reach the same goal. The biggest challenge for me currently is the ability to get together live with musicians to rehearse (we’re separated by long distances). And that is why I started the second band — to get together in-person to work out songs.

What does it take to apply all your focus in making a project come to fruition?

Persistence. That’s the key. In my mind, the way to success in any endeavor is simply to keep at it — working as hard as you can — for however long it takes. You will have up and down times, but if you hang in there and never stop striving, you can accomplish wonders.

What are you gaining from spending your time on ultimately doing what you love? 

It’s the long-term goals that satisfy me: writing and arranging songs, tightening up the live performance, recording original material. Although there are certainly parts of the process that I enjoy, there is also a fair amount of “grind.” Nothing good is ever easy! But in the end, I appreciate the fruits of my labor.

Are there any other passions aside from your music that’s getting your attention?

Family. It’s everything to me. This week, both sisters (one from northern California, one from the east coast) are staying with me. It’s awesome! Nothing I like better than hanging out with my relatives.
