Exclusive Interviw with BryNN BOWMAN
What’s your musical background?
I started taking classical voice lessons when I was 11, and I studied classical singing through college. I started singing rock music when I was 13, and then I got really into an a cappella group singing when I was in high school. I have a masters degree in commercial music now!
How would you describe your style of music for a new audience?
Whimsical with an edge! My music is bold, high-energy, eccentric. The lyrics give you a glimpse into who I am, and my desire to create authentic and approachable art.
Was it ever frustrating practicing as you were building your skill?
Of course! There were (and still are) days that I didn’t think I was good enough, that I would never make anything worth listening to. My voice would be hoarse on the days I needed to perform. I’m told “no”all the time, but I’ve learned to keep pushing, practicing, and believing in myself.
What advice would you give an artist if they hit a challenge like this?
If you are confident in yourself and your abilities, you won’t be as frustrated. Never stop learning. If you need a break, take a day off, and then get up and kick butt the next day. Take care of yourself and pour that energy into your craft. After all, you’re making this music to impact others.
What was your first single?
My first release was “Wanna”. It was one of the first songs I wrote, and the lyrics are a conversation I never got to have with a former best friend. I took all of my pent-up strife and put it into the song instead.
What is your latest single out?
I released “Confident Woman” in June. It’s my first happy song! It’s also among the first songs I wrote, but it focuses on embracing your sexuality. Society tells women we have to cover our bodies and act politely, but the song turns that upside down. It gives women permission to feel confident and have fun in the bodies we’ve been given.
What is the difference between the two?
“Wanna” is an introspective look at ending a friendship, whereas “Confident Woman” is a carefree bop. A lack of self-worth drives the narrative in “Wanna”, but the lessons I learned created the vibe in “Confident Woman”. It’s much more fun when you love who you are!
What are you looking forward to with an upcoming release?
I’m working on a couple new singles right now that will drop later this year. I am incredibly excited to show off all sides of who I am and create new connections with new listeners. I also can’t wait to start playing these new songs at live shows!!
How would you describe your style of getting music out? A bootcamp or go with the flow?
Somewhere in between. I generally have a timeline in place, but I have to be flexible along the way. I’ll stress myself out. I have a stiff structure, but I also need a plan so I stay on top of things. It gets easier every time!
