Still G & Slapy release “Endless” (single)

If you follow the international hip-hop scene, then you’ve probably already heard about Still G & Slapy, who have been stirring up a lot of attention and multinational interest with their sensuous Italian rap stylings, which are fused together brilliantly in the new single “Endless.” “Endless” combines elements of American west coast hip-hop, R&B and old fashioned pop melodies to unleash a commanding blend of beats that don’t stop until they’ve got everyone in the room swinging along with them. Still G & Slapy are firing on all cylinders in this studio track, and proving once and for all that the future of their genre lies outside of the insular market that gave birth to it; theirs is truly a worldbeat brand of rap if I’ve ever heard it.

The lyrics are fluid and immaculately mixed in “Endless,” but I wouldn’t say that they’re the only evocative element in the whole of the song. There’s a lot of intricacies to the synth parts in the background, as well as in the foundational bassline, and I found it interesting that, even at relatively moderate volumes, all of the instrumental components shine just as brightly as they do when consumed at a louder level. You can tell that both Still G & Slapy value tonality just as much as any rock n’ roll act do, because there’s not a stitch of muddiness in this master mix; everything is crisp, clean and precisely defined as to afford us maximum sonic depth from beginning to end.

Compared to the American hip-hop that I’ve been reviewing lately, the multilayered concept employed in the construction of the hook in “Endless” is urbane and remarkably inventive. It’s a shame that there aren’t more rappers putting as much attention into the subtle details of their songcraft as these two are, and I think that, in the long run, that’s actually going to propel them towards the top of the rap hierarchy in Italy and abroad. Hip-hop is a genre that was built on the backs of true music aficionados, who worshipped the beats that they laced into their music, and in Still G & Slapy, I hear two artists that are just as committed, just as affected and devoted to their medium as any of the icons that came before them were.

“Endless” is a tremendous effort from Still G & Slapy, and there’s no denying that both of these guys are getting better and more mature in their songwriting as they’ve racked up experience as individual performers. They don’t sound amateurish, inept or unprepared here; on the contrary, they’re producing on an elite level, dismissing the very notion of recycling rhythms that lost their luster years ago, and experimenting with elements of their sound that many of their contemporaries would openly shy away from ever toying with. In short, Still G & Slapy are asserting themselves as two musicians who are the forefront of not only their scene, but the independent side of the genre that they clearly were born to contribute to and, subsequently, advance.
